General Q&A

Have questions? Chances are we have answers! Here are some of the most frequently asked questions that we hear from folks like you! Don’t see what you’re looking for? No worries, feel free to contact us!

I am trying pole for the first time! What should I know?

Welcome! We recommend reviewing our “Getting Started with Pole & Aerial” cheatsheet to get a quick overview!

Where you at?

We are located at 2426 Webberville Rd just off of East 7th Street and we are super close to Kitty Cohen’s, Gourmands, and Cavalier! There is free street parking in the neighborhood.

Do I need to sign up for class beforehand or can I just show up?

We highly recommend registering beforehand on our scheduling app at least 3 hours in advance of class. If class has no signups within a 3 hour window, it is eligible for cancellation by the instructor. Sign up for class now!

No, we do not have a class minimum. Even if we only have one sign up at least 3 hours in advance of class, the class will be held as scheduled!

Do you have a class minimum?

Am I welcome at soFly Social?

We welcome all people ages 16 and above regardless of gender identity, physique, or if you like cats or dogs more. We also welcome people from every and all studios inside of Austin, in the US, and around to world to come play with us. We do not make any claims to have any intellectual property that we cannot share with the entire world.

Note: Individuals aged 16-18 are welcome to attend class as a student with parental permission.

What would get me kicked out of soFly Social without a refund?

The rules are simple. Don't come to class under the influence of drugs or alcohol and don't be discriminatory.

Yes, we’re all about not taking shit too seriously, yes we should be able to laugh (rather than despair) at the sometimes all too real injustices of this world, and yes when we are in situations of insecurity we may travel to dark places. However, there is a fine line between working through dark issues and flippantly expressing discriminatory behavior.

We do not tolerate words and actions of racism, sexism, misogyny, homophobia, transphobia, ageism, body shaming, and sex-worker shaming.

If any behavior like this is brought to our attention as crossing the line there will be very blunt and stern words. Your invitation into soFly will be terminated with no refunds.

Is my underage child welcome at soFly Social?

We value the freedom that comes with movement. We do not suppress the freedom to move in any way a person wants to, including in a more adult and provocative way for any of our classes, performances, and events.

Our students need to feel free to express themselves through movement, attire, and music. Because of this, we do not allow children under the age of 16 in the studio. However, 16+ are welcome to attend class as a student with parental permission.

Is my dog/cat/llama/furchild welcome at soFly Social?

Although we absolutely go squee over cute furry creatures, we only allow service animals inside of our studio out of respect for people who may have allergies.

Can my friend, relative, or significant other stay in the studio me while I take class?

We do not permit friends, significant others, and relatives of students to wait in the studio while a student attends a group class or open studio time. We are a very small studio and all available space is for the students. We encourage them to wait at the many casual coffee, bar, and dining establishments nearby!

I am coming from another studio and would like to play!

Awesome sauce! If the class you are interested in has requirements listed in the class description, please hit us up ASAP, and we will plan for a quick 5-10 minute assessment prior to the class to see if you can comfortably ease into the class’s requirements.

I have an injury, physical health issue, or am pregnant.

Everything we do is physically challenging. Be smart and be responsible, let the instructor know prior to the start of class if there's anything physical that we need to be aware of. We will try to modify for you so you can have a great experience without causing unnecessary stress to the body.

Can I purchase a group class package and split it between multiple people?

Sorry, passes, packages, and memberships are non-transferable.

How can I keep the soFly vibe during class?

We encourage you to talk & make friends with your classmates, share apparatuses, and give positive feedback. Encourage your classmates when you see them struggle and help give them the power to succeed. Be present in the moment and keep your phone on silent while in class.

Get Started with Pole & Aerial

Welcome to your pole, aerial, and grounded movement journey! We have collected the most frequently asked questions by people wanting to get a quick start and have answered them on this page. Don’t see your question answered? Feel free to contact us!

I am trying pole for the first time! What classes can I take?

Welcome! We recommend taking Absolute Beginner Pole to start. Absolute Beginner Pole is held on Mondays and Wednesdays at 12pm, Thursdays at 5:45pm, and Saturdays at 10:00 am

Many of our students take Absolute Beginner Pole 3-4 times before moving onto Novice Pole. You are also welcome to take all-level fluidity movement classes like Sensual Slow Flow or Presence + Power as well as all-level conditioning classes such as FlyFIIT and Bend Not Break.

I have never tried pole dance before. Can I go to an Open Studio session to try it out?

Unfortunately, Open Studio is meant for students who have attended at least one Absolute Beginner Pole class at soFly Social or have existing experience with pole and aerial.

New to the studio but have existing experience? Please let us know in advance!

What kind of poles do you have? Are they safe?

We have seven 45mm diameter X-Poles that are designed with withstand the most extreme moves in any pole dancer’s repertoire and high frequency use in the teaching and competition environment.

Each pole is approximately 12 feet tall and has spin and static capability. Five of our pole are chrome plated and two are stainless steel for individuals with metal sensitivity.

What should I wear to pole dancing class?

For beginner pole dancers, we recommend wearing tight-fitting shorts or capris that expose the backs of the knees and a sleeveless top for men and women. Exposed skin helps the body grip to the pole better!

What kind of footwear should I bring to pole class?

We recommend dancing with bare feet for our beginner pole classes in order to get comfortable with the apparatus. We do not recommend wearing heels for your first few classes. It is helpful to have socks and/or leg warmers on standby.

Do I have to share poles in class?

A fundamental mission we have in our studio is to provide our students with a social experience that is rich with camaraderie. These relationships frequently begin when you learn with a pole partner. We max out our pole classes at 10 people so it may be possible you share with another person. We highly recommend sharing poles and switch pole buddies in order to get the full social benefits of soFly Social!

Should I apply lotion to my skin before class?

No, lotion can cause you to feel extra slippery and may prevent you from having the right amount of grip needed for pole.

What else should I bring?

A water bottle is highly recommended for all of our classes. Hydration is important!

What should I avoid?

We recommend leaving your valuables at home and taking off any jewelry before attending class to avoid snags and choking hazards.

Please practice good hygiene and arrive free of any strong smells (perfume or body odor).

Can my friend, child, or significant other stay in the studio me while I take class?

No. We do not permit anybody other than our students and staff in the studio during group class or open studio time.

How old can I be to attend classes at soFly Social?

Our studio is meant for adults to feel free to express themselves through movement, attire, and music. Because of this, we do not allow children under the age of 16 in the studio. However, individuals between 16-18 are welcome to attend class as a student with parental permission.

Can I have an alcoholic beverage before class?

No. Do not attend class under the influence of drugs or alcohol. If an instructor suspects you are under the influence you will be asked to leave immediately with no refund.
